This Elizabethan mansion was built by Elizabeth of Shrewsbury, otherwise known as Tess of Hardwick. She built the mansion on the site where she was born in relative poverty in 1527.The entertaining rooms were lavish & on the upper floors of the mansion. Calke Abbey-NT

This fascinating place is billed as an unstately home. The National Trust took it over in 1985 & decided to leave the "gentle neglect" as it is rather than restore. It is easy to understand how many estates like Calke Abbey have fallen into decline in recent years through lack of funds.
